From the death of Kanye's mom to the ressurection of his belief in Jesus, the story of Kanye West's rise to fame was quite intriguing to us. We watched it on Netflix last week and man oh man.. there were countless moments of inspiration and valuable lessons throughout! I figured, since Kanye is one of the most successful music artists today, it would be nice to share some main points and takeaways that could help our musical network in their pursuits, whether you're signed or looking to stay independent. Not only have we experienced some of this first hand, but we have witnessed other artists go through the very same struggles and victories. So here's our top 10 takeaways from watching Jeen-Yuhs:
(1) Faith and confidence plays a role
Kanye's confidence (some say cockiness, others arrogance), definitely rubs some folks the wrong way, but it seemed like a necessary ingredient to get the right folks to believe in his vision before anyone knew him.
(2) Sometimes you have to sacrifice
Kanye knew he wanted to be a rapper, but he needed beats and didn't have SFRBeats.com to go to, so he made them himself. He even did his own marketing in the beginning. So the lesson is, not having someone to do it for you is no excuse. Sacrifice and just do it. It could be your door. Then once you are in, delegate the work you don't want to do to someone else.
(3) Sometimes the worst tragedies can become the greatest opportunities
Kanye had just signed his first deal as a rapper when the unthinkable happened.. car accident.. broken jaw.. mouth wired shut. How would he be able to rap now? He turned this tragedy into a story.. and into the song and music video that made him famous - "Through the Wire". Lesson... vulnerability sells. Let your passion for music be your armor.
(4) Embrace criticism
See it as a sign of your uniqueness. You can learn to channel this energy into growth.
(5) Mental health is as important as physical health
Keeping a healthy environment is one of the keys to fostering growth and being able to maintain it amidst an ever more stressful life.
(6) Keep your trust circle small - Self explanatory lol.
(7) Be yourself.. don't try to follow the herd.
Kanye knew the industry didn't need another Jay-Z - they already have a Jay-Z.
(8) You can't judge a book by its cover
Kanye went through years of folks overlooking his rap abilities, but his commitment to rapping and promotion won in the end.
(9) Go where the action is.
Kanye moved to New York from Chicago because that's where the major hip hop action was happening at that time. Who knows what he would become if he stayed in Chicago.
(10) It's not what others say or believe. It's about what you say and believe.
