As a producer going on 20 years now, I’ve had the pleasure of being involved in the creative process for 100’s of artists and 1000’s of songs.. Naturally I’ve paid attention to what works and what doesn’t. Let’s get right to it.
1) Keep it simple. Music is for entertainment - not college study.
2) Make it compelling. Music is to be felt - more than heard.
3) Let the words “breath”. Give your listener time to eat your words.. And digest them, by making silence have just as much importance as the words themselves.
4) Keep it simple. Again… simple songs are easiest to remember.
5) Don’t be too direct.. Let your listener “guess”. Just like a good movie, you don’t want to spill all the beans from the jump.
6) Make it compelling. Obviously this is important…Make your song real. Make your song convincing.
7) Write directly. Your listener should feel like your song is talking directly to them, or they are speaking directly to someone else.
8) Be clever. Throw some curve balls in their with your story, or use weird words (or even made up words), alliteration, rhyming of course, etc.. all of those are tools that get songs to stick in your listeners heads
9) Create a theme.. And vary it. A great song always have a great melody with variations on that melody - either rhythmic variations, note variations, variation in intensity, delivery, etc..
10) Keep it simple. Obviously this is the most important. Simple songs simply sell better!
What sits well with the larger audience a lot of times will sound boring to a super creative. But after bouncing between both boundaries, you’ll probably find it’s the middle ground that’s the perfect balance between a song you love, and a song everyone else loves. Now go buy some of our beats and write some hits… no excuses now! Lol
