Before getting to the 18 steps, Do This:
Look at what you are most consistent at (be it parenting, job, school, etc), and understand why you’re consistent at it. You may think it’s because that’s just what happened or it’s what society says you are to do… but it’s really because you’re putting a lot of time, effort, and money toward it. If you feel like you can’t break that, maybe you can’t.. .not right away or all at once… but you can back off from it slowly, responsibly, and safely if it’s something you really don’t want.
1. Start with what you love to do. If you don’t love it, good luck sticking with it.
2. Figure out what the fundamentals are of what you’re trying to do, and practice that on purpose at least 15-30 minutes everyday. For example, if it’s singing, practice singing pitches with piano or tones. We created Vocal Lesson audio you can follow along and download here: Vocal Lessons: Chromatic Scales Normal and Vocal Lessons: Chromatic Scales Fast
3. Write down your daily/weekly/monthly goals and look at them first thing every day.
4. Ask someone close to keep you on your game… have them ask you “Did you do that today? Or how as your practice?”
5. Or.. set a daily reminder / checkup in your phone to ask you your progress.
6. Understand what your biggest distractions are, and if they are not more important than your success, eliminate it.
7. Don’t compare yourself to someone else. Compare yourself to your old self.
8. Remember an ugly truth… you will have almost no support in the beginning.. Get used to it.
9. Try different things, including doing cover songs, writing for other artists, posting on Twitter or Pinterest or Instagram or etc to see what works better…
10. Pay attention to what folks seem to like the most (Is it doing covers? Is it writing for folks? Is it performing live? Is it performing on social media?)
11. Appreciate the good things, but put all your energy toward improving the bad things.
12. Budget your money. Decide what you can do to contribute toward your career and stick to it.
13. Study success. Find someone you love that’s successful, learn their history, learn their every move, and try to flip that into your own thing to see if you find the same success.
14. Measure your growth… from being able to sing better, write better, perform better.
15. Keep your circle small. Be open-minded to new ideas, but not vulnerable to untrusted sources.
16. Hang out with like-minded goal-driven people. Avoid complaining, negative, hateful, people at all costs.
17. Find time to clear your mind / meditate / pray - make balance a way of life
18. Don’t be afraid of that “leap of faith” decision especially when you have been finding some success throughout your journey. See the signs as they are.. If you have people coming up to your shows saying how awesome you are… if you pack the small club out.. You can probably pack the big club out if more of those same type of people knew about you. If you have 2 people asking you to write for them, you can probably have 4 more…. then 8… then 16. Don’t be afraid to flip the switch and devote your all to what you love. Just don’t do that right away… be safe about it.. Have a plan on how to do it.. And be honest and real with yourself…. And ask others to be the same toward you.
Good luck!
