I'm sure you're used to hearing about how important mixing and mastering is.. And duh it's to have the best sound, but the real reasons you should get it are actually stranger than that. You see, getting your song to "sound better" is purely subjective .. for example, the rap artists of the 80s would balk at how "distorted" bass can sound in today's modern trap music, and classical artists of the 1600's would call jazz and rock "devil music" for its daring departure from the structured melodies of yesteryear. The point is, the term "better".. music that "sounds better" - is a purely subjective term... an individual's opinion that can change with age, location, and even current mood.
So then why do we "need" mixing and mastering? Let's start with what not having mixing and mastering is like. Imagine your favorite movie. Ok, now imagine what it would look and sound like if a phone recorded every scene. Think what Transformers or Batman would be like.. If it looked like Blair Witch..or your friends iPhone clip. Do you think it would have the same chance of success? The same chance of making millions? You might be saying, well at least Blair Witch made it to the movies right? LOL.. let's get into the list.
#1 You are competing with millions of other songs.. But only a few of them will get a lot of listens. Here's the good news. Most of those songs are not mixed and mastered by a true professional. That's where you are able to take advantage and have an upper leg by getting professional mixing!
#2 Spotify favors mixes specifically formatted for streaming to engage their audience. Spotify and others looks at your audio as numbers and math... a logical algorithm that is not subject to individual opinions and does not have ears to judge what "sounds better" or not. It could care less. It just wants to pick the best song for each of their listeners. Do you know what that specific formatting is? Probably not.. But a professional mix engineer who has mixed 100's of songs would.
#3 Instrumentals may sound nice by themselves, but adding your vocals can change that. Every vocal has a different audio profile - with different frequencies - and different dynamics. For that vocal to sit properly in the mix so your song plays as balanced (and nowadays, as loud) as possible, a unique mix must be applied to the elements of the song. It's like a puzzle.. Each puzzle piece is an element of the song that must fit exactly together to give the clearest picture. Imagine trying to sell a puzzle with missing pieces or pieces that don't fit! (Can't put a square peg in a round hole)
#4 Thousands of dollars of gear sounds better - I know, that's subjective, but it's like the difference between a brick phone of yesteryear and a smartphone. So .. why not spend a couple hundred to get a top quality sound using all that fancy gear! Half-@$$ing stuff doesn't win. You want to win right?
#5 Not only do you attract fans, but you attract top-level business and colleagues.. record label, licensing opportunities, and high-dollar doors that open because that type of business has an eye and ear for the highest quality. The top of the food chain only likes to associate with the highest quality product (your mixed and mastered song), otherwise it hurts their own brand. There's a ton of money in sync licensing nowadays, and you don't want to be left out because you didn't get mixing and mastering on your song.
#6 Getting your song mixed by a true professional can also be a promotional trick.. You just got your song heard by someone with a massive network of music industry connections.. From the managers to the labels to major artists themselves, mix and mastering engineers are in the center of it all. If you can get on a professional mixer's radar just by giving them business, you've basically got a two-for-one deal. Now your name and song can come up in conversations with other music industry professionals!
#7 Getting your song mixed by a pro now means you can add his name (and his credits) to your resume... an instant boost in your own credibility and spotlight! Imagine telling the world hey, I just got my song mixed by the same guy who mixed on a Michael Jackson record! BOOM.. instant credibility, and your brand equity just skyrocketed! I told you these were strange reasons!
#8 Mixing and mastering makes your song sound better. LOL
