Today I'm going to show you how to get a good lead vocal mix. I'm going to break this down into small bite size chunks so you guys can study each part one by one and not be so overwhelming right here in the begining.
So, this is the very first step I did. You know I'ma let you hear the vocal without the processing and with the processing so you can get an idea of the difference between the two. This is with the processing. This is without the processing. Its like night and day difference. So I'm going to show you the very first thing i did to start working on this lead vocal.
Very first thing, very first step, is to add what's called a "Gate". This Gate has a bunch of controls, but the main control that you want to pay attention to is the "Threshold". That's this area up in here. Now, this plug-in is not an expensive plug-in. As a matter of fact, it's a free plug-in that you can find on line. Its called "Prefix".So when we add this Gate, what's happening here is the noise any noise that is in-between the singer's words are effectively muted and what this does is prevent any nasty noise and pops and clicks and just you know background noises.
Say you have a plane fly over head or a car passes by. You can get rid of all those in-between noises by using the Gate. I like having my gate set around -40 right here and the Threshold control, you'll have to play around with it to see how soft or loud or what level you'll need to put this Gate on so that it only turns down the noise and not the words, but the gate is the very first step. So this is how it sounds with the Gate. It's not very audible in our studio because our studio is very acousticly treated. So you're not going to hear the difference as much as you would say if you where in a noisy environment.
That is the first step guys! Just putting that Gate on top. Then in the next video, I'll show you the very next step. So if you guys liked it, hit like or follow and all those good things. Tag somebody if you think they would really benefit from this and you think they can get some better mixes out of what im teaching them, go head and tag them. They would really appreciate it. So stay tune for more it's your boy, Slick, So Fo Real Productions Real Beats for Real Artists.
