My past gig with Keith Washington (Soul Train Award Winner, "Kissing You" #1 R&B song) reminded me of how small seemingly insignificant decisions can lead to the grandest of events. 1 month ago I didn't know Keith nor anyone around him. I was just a music producer who worked with a lot of younger acts and made beats for our online following (true I've worked with bigger songwriters before, but no one quite like Keith!). Saxophone is one of the instruments I happen to play along with others (piano, bass, etc). I'll use it to record and produce tracks, but I wasn't really known as a live performing saxophonist.. until this past summer. You see, I wanted to put something to the test..something I formulated almost 10 years ago with my former artists.. I wanted to see if this strategy still worked. Turns out.. It does!
So the first step in all of this.. Is to be prepared. You want to practice and perfect your skill. There really is no substitute.. You must dedicate consistent time to your craft and focus on growth.. Target your weakness, study the greats before you, and do that day in day out. I had my artists in the past do this, as well as making myself do this. This and more secrets I will share next has landed my artists gigs with the likes of Montell Jordan, Bilal, Avant.. and now Keith Washington.
The best part about this strategy is.. It has nothing to do with relationships! No politics or friend favors are necessary to get opportunities like these. It all starts with your decision to practice. Next week I'll share the 2nd step in creating opportunities from nothing.
