This is what every artists needs to hear. Cover songs, I know you may not like to hear it, because as an artist you want to be your own self. You want to make your own music and be solo. The thing is, there’s always hard work before the reward comes. So if you want to be able to do songs, your own songs that are hot and everybody’s feeling it, they got to know you first and it’s hard for people to know you and learn you without having something like a cover song that they can relate to that they already know about to attach you to.
For example, you may have a club gig you may have two songs in your pocket that you want to do that are original, but see nobody knows those songs. Your audience wants to be able to be entertain by you and to sing along with you. They want to feel it so they got to know the song first, especially if they don't really understand you as an artist yet.
Cover songs are like your door into your fan’s heart. For example, you want to cover an “Erykah Badu” joint or you want to go to pop, “Beyonce’” you want to cover a “Beyonce” joint if you’re a woman, cover the “Beyonce” joint. Then, once you come with that and you do fire on that, your crowd is already into you and then they’re more inclined to be receptive to your original songs. So cover songs, that's the way that you open the door to building your fan base and then you drop them with the original stuff. Patience is a virtue…
