I am here to talk to you about two organizations that you need to be a part of called PPL and PRS. This information is especially important for singers in popular genres of the U.K. like Soul, Rock, Jazz and others..
PPL is a royalty collection society for performers and record labels. They issue the licenses for the performance of music in clubs, hotels, restaurants, and any business in the United Kingdom that broadcasts copyrighted music.
PRS is just like the PPL except they collect royalties on behalf of the songwriters, publishers, and composers of the music. So if you wrote a song for Prince, Prince's record label gets royalties from PPL while you get royalties from PRS.
In the United States, BMI ASCAP and SESAC (SoundExchange, Harry Fox Agency, etc..) collect royalties and issue licenses. But for you to capitalize on royalty revenues in the United Kingdom, you must also be signed up with PPL and PRS. There are various other royalty collection societies around the world that you want to learn when you're ready to grow into other markets.
Yes.. which can be a bummer for aspiring artists since some of the United States collections societies don't charge, but the bright side is it weeds out those who aren't really serious or trying to invest in themselves so they can focus on the ones that can... a huge plus for you serious minded artists out there. So invest the change once you have music you're ready to profit from, and remember who told you lol.
